THE BHARGAVA family continued to receive a string of VIP visitors on Tuesday, all pledging to do their best to get the assailants of Mehar Bhargava punished.
They included former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former UP chief minister Mayawati and Governor TV Rajeswar.
Vajpayee, on his part, announced that a monument, symbolic of woman empowerment, would be built in Lucknow in memory of Mehar Bhargava, “who scarificed her life to protect the dignity and respect of a woman”.
The monument would give confidence to women and encourage them to be firm, strong and protect their dignity, he said. Vajpayee alleged that the State government was under pressure and efforts were on to hide the truth and protect the killers, “otherwise there was no reason why the accused could not be held so far.” He blamed the Mulayam government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the State. He said the State government should not hesitate in taking assistance of Central investigative agencies, including the CBI, to nab the killers of Mehar Bhargava.
Governor TV Rajeswar visited the residence of Mehar Bhargava along with his wife and paid condolence to the family. The governor met Mehar’s mother-in-law Rani Ram Kumar Bhargava and paid floral tributes at Mehar’s portrait.
And when Mayawati went to pay tributes at the picture of Mehar she was told: “You are a bold lady, a woman has been killed, the criminals are roaming freely and we hope justice from you”.
“But I am not the chief minister”, she said. “So what, if you put pressure on the government the killers would be behind bars”, they said. Then Luv Bhargava said: “Whenever Mehar gained consciousness in the hospital she asked us if the criminals who shot her had been arrested or not. The dejection on her face was clear when we replied in the negative”.
“Please fulfill the last wish of my mother and get the killers arrested”, Mehar’s daughter pleaded. Mayawati was overwhelmed even as Rani Ram Kumar Bhargava recounted the courage and spirit of Mehar. “She always raised her voice against injustice and laid down her life fighting criminals”, Rani said.
“I will write to the Governor to intervene in the issue,” Mayawati said. “Don’t be disheartened, have faith in me, the culprits would be punished”, she assured the Bhargavas.
“When my government was in power criminals were on the run, several hardcore criminals were put in jail”, she said.
“The Samajwadi Party government will fall within few months,” Mayawati said adding: “When the Bahujan Samaj Party government comes to power you will not have to request for the arrest of criminals. I assure you justice” she said.
