NABARD focus on women?s empowerment

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day today, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Bhopal Regional Office organized a meeting focusing attention on women empowerment.

Addressing the meeting, Chief General Manager, NABARD, AK Mathur said the apex organization was committed to rural prosperity and had been addressing gender issues in credit and support services through implementation of a number of women specific programmes.

He said NABARD had formulated specific schemes to assist women to overcome the problems faced by them concerning raw material, capacity building, marketing and credit.

‘Assistance for marketing of non-farm products of rural women (MAHIMA) has been designed to give a fillip to the income to the income earnings of rural poor women and also to create a ‘niche’ or pro-women market’, he said.

Mathur also highlighted the role played by NABARD in coordinating with government agencies, financial institutions and NGOs towards emancipation of women.

Assistant professor, Government Girls’ PG College, Dr Preeti Mishra enumerated the national and international scenario in relation to the social & economic status of women.

She raised sensitive issues like adverse sex ratio in the country, illiteracy and general backwardness prevailing among women.
