A note on the Napoli web site said the club "wishes the great Argentine champion, who wrote unforgettable pages of Napoli's history, a rapid and full recovery."
Maradona's doctor described the soccer legend's condition early on Monday as critical but said early tests showed his heart had improved overnight.
Maradona played for Napoli from 1984-1991, leading the southern Italian team to two league titles, an Italian Cup and a UEFA Cup.
He led the Argentine national team to victory in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and to the finals of the same competition four years later in Italy.
