National TT captain?s cry
PAWAN KUMAR Sharma of Allahabad has been elected as captain of Indian team to take part in the ninth Fespic Games to be held at Kaula Lumpur.
Sharma is facing financial problems to participate in the Fespic Game and is looking for sponsors to meet his expenses for participation in the games. Pawan ranked 11th in Asia and 59th in world among physically challenged players has several International table tennis title under his name. Sharma received a letter of participation from Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) dated October 6, 2006 which stated his selection as one of the athletes to represent India at the 9th Fespic Games to be held at Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia between November 25 to December 1, 2006.
However, the PCI informed him that his entry can be confirmed on remittance of entry fee of Rs 40150 to meet travel, lodging and other expenses by October 31, 2006.
Sharma lamented that despite achieving fifth place in Asian Table Tennis championship 2005 and being a recipient of the National Role Model award from the President, the state government has neither felicitated him nor recognised his achievement. He said that since the Ministry of Sports has not offered any financial assistance to the Indian team participating in the Fespic Games players will have to age the funds on their own. Preeti Dixit (Table Tennis) of Kanpur, Brijendra Singh(Table Tennis) of Bareilly and Ajay Maurya of Azamgarh (Athletics) are the members of the Indian team.
