"Chhannuram Watti was shot dead yesterday in a 'jan adalat' (public court) of the Maoists in Nilabaya area, about 450 km from the state capital," a police source in Dantewada said.

Two days ago, a group of armed Naxalites took Watti, a former sarpanch, and some members of his family to a jan adalat called in the presence of several villagers.

Watti and his family members were assaulted and he was then shot dead, police said.

The Naxalites had accused Watti of threatening Sangham members affiliated to the rebels in his area, police said.

On June 27, another Congress leader named Lalit Markam was killed by Naxalites in Dantewada.
