The Naxalites chased away the labourers and other staff and set afire the tractors at Cherthu-Parbalpur village on Wednesday night, the police said, adding the contractor's refusal to pay extortion money to the Naxalites could be the reason behind the attack.
The work on the 19 km canal has been temporarily abandoned.
There was no report of any injuries.
Raids are on to apprehend the Naxalites, the police said.
