NBA activist Medha Patkar's health worsens

Patkar -- whose hunger strike to protest against the raising of the Narmada dam entered its 19th day -- is deteriorating, warned doctors attending on her on Sunday.

The health of environmental activist Medha Patkar -- whose hunger strike to protest against the raising of the Narmada dam entered its 19th day -- is deteriorating, warned doctors attending on her on Sunday.

"Medha Patkar has become weak after not eating for so long," said a doctor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where she was forcibly admitted on April 5.

AIIMS medical superintendent DK Sharma said that Patkar's blood sugar had fallen and her blood pressure was fluctuating.

Patkar has been on an indefinite hunger strike since March 29 to protest the raising of the Sardar Sarovar dam's height from 110 metres to 122 metres.

Dipti Bhatnagar, a close associate of Patkar, said the latter continued to take lemonade, but has been fasting for the last 19 days.

The activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) had started their agitation after the government announced raising the height of the dam, which the activists claim will affect over 35,000 families.
