Members of the NERMU took out a procession and handed over a memorandum to the general manger, the chief traffic manager and the chief security officer. They demanded stringent action against the errant RPF men. They said the railway authorities would have to face the consequences, if the demand was not met.

They staged a demonstration at the GM’s office and raised slogans against the RPF jawans.

All India Railwaymen’s Federation acting president KL Gupta said the mysterious silence maintained by senior officials on the incident had added fuel to the fire. They said this attitude was anti-railway and anti-people.

Gupta said guards were in shock following the incident and alleged that the railway administration was trying to cover up its failure.

The members decided to step up their agitation at the meeting.

Guard Udai Shanker Singh was on duty at 5209 Jansewa Express. The RPF escorts boarded the train from Chhapra railway station. Near Mairwa railway station, a passenger pulled the chain and alighted from the train. The guard reported it in the diary. But, the RPF escorts warned Udai Shanker Singh not to note down the incident.

The dispute between the guard and the RPF escorts took an ugly turn when the train reached the Gorakhpur railway station around 9 pm. The escorts dragged the guard out of his bogey and bashed him up. The incident caused resentment among other guards. They rushed to the GRP police station and mounted pressure to release the guard.
