Narain Karthikeyanmay still be in contention for a Formula One driver's seat with the sport's new entrant Super Aguri F1 of Japan, according to media reports.

Aguri were set to get the go ahead from FIA, motorsports' world governing body, to field a full-fledged team in 2006.

Takumo Sato, who was fired by BAR-Honda at the end of 2005 season, was said to have been signed up as first driver.

The 29-year old first Indian F1 driver, however, faced stiff competition from many home racers including Sakon Yamamoto, who tested for Narain's former team Jordan last year, reports said.

Meanwhile, Williams F1 has confirmed that it could still sign up Narain for the coming season.

"Alex's appointment as Williams' official test and reserve driver does not necessarily mean that the team has no additional role for Narain," team principal Frank Williams was reported as saying in British media.

"The team and Narain are still in dialogue and the possibility of a second testing role for him still exists."Meanwhile, Williams F1 has confirmed that it could still sign up Narain for the coming season.
