The Powai police arrested a 32-year-old Nigerian, who cheated an Income Tax official of Rs 5.6 lakh on the false promise that he had won a lottery of £3 lakh.
Following a complaint by Ajay Kumar Singh (38), a Powai resident, the police laid a trap and arrested Makas Bruno alias Chinedu Okuwzor (32) on Monday evening after luring him to come to Mumbai from Delhi saying that Singh would pay Rs 10 lakh.
“The accused projected himself as a marketing representative of Nigeria High Commission at New Delhi. We have arrested him for cheating, forgery and are looking for a woman who claimed herself as an official of British High Commission,” said Police Inspector Ashok Jadhav.
The police said, Singh allegedly paid Rs 5.6 lakh in four installments to the accused for processing the documents to get clearance from airport authority, customs and the UK government to collect the prize money.
On May 8, after Singh received a call from a woman asking him to pay another Rs 10 lakh in order to claim the prize money, he got suspicious. “For verification, Singh approached the RBI with the receipts where he was informed that the documents were fake,” Jadhav added.
