Under all round attack, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday announced that he was recommending a CBI enquiry into the Nithari killings but now the state government has asked the Centre to make a request in this connection.

Official sources said the UP Government has sent a letter to the Department of Personnel in the Union Ministry, under which the agency comes, to make a request for a CBI probe into the killings in Nithari village and the state government would then handover the case.

Sources said the state's formulation appeared unusual because usually a request for CBI probe into any case comes from the state in a simple and straight forward manner and not conditional.

Under attack over the state police handling of the serial killing of children, the chief minister had said at a press conference in Lucknow on Friday that he was seeking a CBI probe so that independent investigations could be carried out.
