IT IS taking too much time to bridge the gap in the Sadar Overbridge. The bridge is coming up since 2002. It is the same gap that took away the life of a scooterist about six months ago. IT IS taking too much time to bridge the gap in the Sadar Overbridge.
The bridge is coming up since 2002. It is the same gap that took away the life of a scooterist about six months ago. Despite the death and protests, the work on the gap has almost remained suspended.

The bridge is about 1,100 metres and its actual name is ‘Railway over-bridge Sadar bazaar crossing’. This bridge over the railway crossing connects Hussainganj to Cantt Hospital. The main reason to build the bridge to ease traffic in the area. It has already taken three and a half years, and work on the gap is far from complete. And it will take some time more for the bridge to be operational. For three and half years, the bridge has complicated traffic situations for the local people, specially for the people residing in this area and for the shopkeepers, who have to pass by this route regularly.

What makes the situation worse is that the crossing has been blocked with corrugated sheets for the past several months. Even when no work was in progress, the crossing remained closed, which posed heavy problems for the passersby. The situation is like people neither have the bridge nor a proper road.

Former corporator, Cantt Board Jaiprakash Gupta, says: “Life in this area has turned hellish due to this. The area needed an overbridge for overcoming the traffic problems that existed here. We were happy when the foundation of the bridge was laid four years ago. We also understood that it would cause some inconvenience, but we were happy that the bridge was at least coming up. But they have prolonged the work way too much.”

“The bridge, we understand was being made to end the traffic woes of the people, but it has created more traffic mess. Everyday we see accidents happening here, and those accidents result in ugly altercations and fights. I don’t think they will be able to complete the bridge till next 12 months,” says a trader who has his shop right at the middle of the bridge.

He added, “Our business has also been affected due to the entire mess.

Customers avoid coming to this area because they fear getting stuck up in traffic and chaos.”

However, KK Mittal, managing director, UP Bridge Corporation said, “No, we will make the bridge operational by the end of April.”

He adds: “It is not our fault. Railways were supposed to give us Rs 95 lakh by February 2005 towards the cost of construction over the railway crossing. For the rest of the bridge the money came from the State government. But railways gave us only Rs 15 lakh in March 2005, then another Rs 25 lakh in August, and then Rs 12 lakh in January. But, now we are not waiting anymore for them. We have begun the work on our own now and will make the bridge operational by the end of April.”
