"Commuters, who often disobey zebra crossings, jump traffic signals and violate other rules will have limited scope to escape as we have changed our tactics from tracing the offenders to impose challan. Now they will be challaned on the spot," said Anil Kumar Rao, joint commissioner of Gurgaon police.

Additional cops are being deployed at Iffco Chowk, Shankar Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and other busy points across the city, where traffic offences are being reported frequently.

Earlier, only one police constable used to manage traffic at these points. Therefore, it was difficult to catch the offenders simultaneously. Many unruly drivers take the advantage of it. But now there will be three to four policemen at each busy intersection, said Rao.

Earlier, the traffic cops had no option but to note down the registration number of the vehicles and serve challans at the owners' doorsteps.

Police say that with the new practice, there will not be any delay in tracing offenders and prosecuting them. "People should appreciate this step and corporate with us," Rao said.
