In order to put a check on operators’ taking hidden charges from customers, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) would bring a consultation paper seeking opinion from industry, consumer and other stake holders how it can be stopped.

“We are seeking data from all telecom operators that have introduced new tariff schemes to check whether there are any hidden charges that are against consumers’ interests,” TRAI chairman J.S. Sarma said.

He also clarified that TRAI never said that all the tariff schemes would be made on per second pulse basis. The idea is that in addition to existing tariff plans, operators should offer a tariff scheme that should be on per second basis and the tariff for this scheme would be decided by the operators themselves.

The paper would be released within two months, he said.
