ADG (Intelligence) SK Raut said the allegations about phone-tapping by the intelligence wing of the PHQ are baseless. “As per the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 the phones can be tapped only in cases when national security is involved or to tackle organised crimes and that too after proper sanction is obtained from authorities”.
Replying to a query on the equipments available with the State police, Raut said that the equipments are made available by the Centre but the calls can’t be tapped without the assistance of the phone company concerned. He further said that the permission of Chief Secretary and Home Secretary is necessary before tapping any conversation.
The intelligence wing has categorically denied that the phone of anyone in the so-called list of politicians, bureaucrats and journalists that is in circulation and shown by India TV were tapped. However, it did not reveal if phones of other persons not mentioned in the list were tapped in the past or at present.
