Artist Maqbool Fida Husain will celebrate his 93rd birthday in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. He has no regrets being away from home and friends on this special day, for the third successive year.

Husain is in self-imposed exile since January 2006, living in Dubai and London.

“I am a nomad. Static life has no meaning for me. Art compels me to travel and wander from place to place,” he told HT on the phone from Abu Dhabi.

Asked when he intended to return, Husain said: “I’ve never set deadlines. I’ll return once my work is over. It maybe tonight, or it could take longer.”

He had left the country following police complaints by Hindu groups, who charged him with ‘obscenity and showing disrespect’ to their religion.

Husain says the recent Supreme Court order declaring that his paintings were “not obscene”, should answer all those who misunderstood his work.

“There are no restrictions on my movement now.
