Police resorted to lathi charge and burst tear gas shells to disperse a mob, which was protesting the killing of a local youth in a road accident at Vedvyas, on the outskirt of the city on Monday.

As many as 20 persons, including a dozen police personnel, were injured and about 20 passing vehicles were damaged in stone pelting and police action.

The district administration had imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 in the entire area of Bramhunitarang police limit from Monday night.

Stones were pelted at Bramhunitarang police station and vehicles plying on SH10 and NH23 by a mob after the accident.

The mob had also demanded rupess five lakh compensation.

The youth, a helper in a motor garage, Jagei Nawar (18), was crushed to death by a truck.

Fifty-four persons were arrested in this connection since Tuesday.They were remanded to jail custody by a local court.
