Notorious criminal killed in encounter
A NOTORIOUS criminal was shot dead by police during an encounter near a hotel in Cantonment area on Thursday. An accomplice of the slain criminal managed to flee the scene. Both miscreants were fleeing after looting two employees of a private firm.

Rs 50,000, a .38 bore pistol and a motorcycle were recovered from the possession of the criminal. He has been identified as Rakesh, a resident of Hartirath area under the Kotwali police station in Varanasi. The SSP, GK Goswami visited the spot and appreciated the police team for the successful operation.
DSP Cantonment area Santosh Singh, giving details of the encounter, said, two employees of a leading trader of posh Badshahbagh colony under Sigra police station, were going to the bank to deposit the sum of Rs 50,000. As the employees came on the main road from the house of the trader, two motorcycle borne miscreants looted the bag containing money at the gun point and fled towards the direction of Maldahiya crossing.
The shocked employees rushed to the nearby house of trader and narrated the incident. The trader immediately informed the police control room on telephone number 100 about the incident.
Within seconds, wireless message was sounded alerting the cops of different police stations in the district. In the meantime, station officer of Chowk police station spotted two youths going on a fast running motorcycle in Nadesar area.
When, cops signalled them to stop for checking, they ran towards the road of Patel Nagar from Nadesar. The SO of Cantonment police station, who was coming to the IG office, spotted the criminals and police chasing them.
The Inspector Cantonment got down and tried to stop the criminals but they further made an abortive attempt to flee, opening fire on the police team. In retaliation, cops also opened fire on them as a fallout of which, one criminal sustained bullet and slumped on the road.
In the meantime, another criminal managed to flee the scene. The police launched a search operation in nearby areas but he could not be traced out.
Later, the deceased criminal was identified as Rakesh, wanted in a dozen of cases of heinous crime including murder, attempt to murder and loot.
