A special police team early on Sunday shot dead R Ravi alias 'Muttai' Ravi (30), a notorious gangster, in an encounter on the outskirts of the city.

Briefing the media after visiting the Government Headquarters Hospital where a police inspector and sub-inspector were admitted with cut injuries suffered during the encounter, Inspector General of Police (Central Zone) MS Jaffar Sait said 'Muttai Ravi' gave a slip to the lone constable at the Samayapuram Police Station on Saturday where he was brought from the Cuddalore Central Prison in connection with a robbery case.

Five special police teams under Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Das swung into action immediately and vehicles and lodges checked.

Meanwhile, one of the special police teams intercepted Muttai Ravi when he was riding a motorcyle during a vehicle check on the Navalpattu Hundred Feet Road.

On noticing the police, Muttai Ravi stopped his two-wheeler and attempted to escape. When the police tried to catch him, they were attacked with 'aruval' (sickle) injuring Tiruverambur Police Inspector Kannan and Sub Inspector Shanmugavel. Following this, Kannan fired.

Later, he was declared brought dead by the doctors at the Government Headquarters Hospital.
