In an attempt to give priority to emergency visa cases for people travelling to United States a new system of online application for visas has been put in place.
"We have started a new system where we can allot appointments for non-immigrant visa interviews according to priority and wherein the applicant can set up an appointment online, thus reducing the hassle of physically applying," head of visa operations for US embassy William Bartlett said.
"Last year, we issued more than 300,000 visas to Indian citizens visiting US, making us one of the biggest visa operations in the world and we would like to extend the best services we can," he said.
"The main reason to set up this facility was to give priority appointments to emergency cases, such as a medical emergency or a businessman who sees an opportunity. With this, we hope too be able to process business applications within 2 to 3 weeks," Bartlett said.
"We are also looking at other means of paying the visa application fee, which as of now can only be paid through certain branches of HDFC bank. Applicants can call VFS, who is our offsite partner for consular services, if they have any questions. Also through this online system applicants can search for the best possible appointment," he added.
Mumbai consulate visa officer Joseph Pomper said the Mumbai office adjudicated more than 129,000 non-immigrant visa cases in the past year.
