"His landlord called us in the morning, but possibly he died a day ago," DCP Maneesh Agrawal said. "No suicide note has been found, and there’s nothing to suggest he killed himself, so far."

The student, Keanan Mehra, was from Norwalk City near Los Angeles, and had enrolled for an MA in Philosophy at a DU college. He had rented the two-room apartment in Hudson Lines, close to DU’s north campus, a fortnight ago, police said.

Keanan’s parents, father Achal Mehra and his foreigner wife, publish an Indian diaspora magazine in the US. His guardian in Delhi was an aunt who lives in Vaishali, Ghaziabad. She could not be contacted for a reaction.

A case of murder has been registered, said an officer. However, there were no signs of a forced entry into the apartment, or of a struggle of any kind, he said.
