Summer can be harsh on the skin, but why worry when there are facials that not only preserve but also add to your skin glow? Being exposed to the harmful UV rays throughout the day, the face is prone to tanning, pigmentation, early wrinkles and dry patches. Dr Seema Mallik, MD, Eleganza Rejuvenation Clinic, says, “Facials in summers are invigorating and therapeutic.” Here are some facials that she recommends:

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) facials: AHA acids are derived from fruits and flowers and are best taken for their anti-aging effects and properties. It’s advisable for people with pigmented skin.
Anti-oxidant and pollution-fighting facials:

This facial uses creams and masks enriched with free-radical fighting agents like vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E. Pollutants are first detached and the skin is then deep cleansed.

Acne Facials: Useful for teenage and adult acne. This facial should be taken at regular, two-week intervals until the problem gets over. Glow facials can be used to bring glow to the face.
Dr Naresh Arora, Chase Aroma and Skin Care, says, “Facials make one look good, relax and rejuvenate the skin.” He adds that oily skin is more prone to allergies, thus fresh fruits should be used for facials as they act as a cooling agents in the scorching heat.

For oily skin: Paste of aloe vera, cucumber, papaya, and orange would be an ideal face pack for oily skin. And if you add niroli, jasmine, rose or sandlewood oil to the paste, it would make for an excellent facial cream.

Rita Gulati, manager, Shahnaz Hussain salon, says, “In summers, one should go for diamond, pearl or fruit facials. They are good for all skin types.” How do these facials work on the skin? “Diamond facial exfoliates, tightens skin and is anti-ageing. Pearl facial de-tans. According to Dr Mallik, the your skin type determines how frequently you need to do a facial. “Once in a month or twice a month depending on the skin type of a person,” she says.

Facial findings

Diamond, fruit and pearl facials cost between Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000

AHA, anti-oxidant and pollution-fighting, and Acne facials cost between Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000

Always apply tea-tree oil on the face before a facial to prevent redness and rashes.

Yellow fruits contain Vitamin A and treat blemishes and scars. Examples include mango and peach.

Always add aloe vera to the face mask that you make. It cools and de-tans the skin.

Pulp of fruits like cucumber, strawberry, papaya works as an astringent.

Paste of banana, grapes and aloe vera is best for dry skin. It hydrates and de-tans the skin.
