Sabotage was the likely cause of a passenger train crash on early Saturday that killed one woman and injured 27 people in central Pakistan, a Cabinet minister said.

Part of the track had "intentionally been damaged by saboteurs," said Ishaq Khakwani, minister for state railways.

Khakwani, who gave no other details, said authorities were investigating who was behind the "act of terrorism" in the village of Kalanch Wala, about 700 kilometres west of Islamabad.

Other officials said tools apparently used for damaging the track were left at the scene.

About 950 people were on the train when 11 of its 14 cars went off the tracks at 3.15 am, Khakwani said. The crash killed a woman and injured 27 people, he said.

The express train was travelling from the southern city of Karachi to Lahore in the east.

The crash came about a week after another express train derailed last Sunday near the eastern village of Domeli, killing three people. Police have arrested four scrap metal dealers suspected of cutting railway lines in the area.
