One dies in fire cracker unit explosion in Punjab

One person was burnt to death and three others were injured when an explosion took place at a fire cracker manufacturing unit in Amritsar on Monday, police said.

One person was burnt to death and three others were injured when an explosion took place at a fire cracker manufacturing unit in Amritsar on Monday, police said.

"The explosion was so massive that the roof of the unit blew off. Three fire tenders were called in to douse the fire," a police officer said.

He said 41-year-old Amarjit, who was working in the factory at that time, died on the spot.

"From preliminary investigation it seems that the fire was the result of an electric short-circuit," he added.

The cracker manufacturing unit is situated on the outskirts of the Sikh holy city of Amritsar, 225 km from state capital Chandigarh.
