One killed, three injured in poll violence in UP

One person was shot dead and three others were injured on Thursday in a clash between two rival groups at a polling centre in Muzaffarnagar during second phase of panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.

One person was shot dead and three others were injured on Thursday in a clash between two rival groups at a polling centre in Muzaffarnagar during second phase of panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Abid (50) died on the spot and three other also received injuries as members of the two groups exchanged fire at Jahanpur village, police said.

Security has been tightened with additional police personnel deployed in the area.

Four people were killed and over 36 injured during the first phase of 3-tier panchayat elections on October 10 that registered an 80 per cent turnout. Following the violence, Uttar Pradesh government had directed all district magistrates and police chiefs to make elaborate security arrangements.

Polling was held in 198 blocks spread across 68 districts of Uttar Pradesh in the second phase.
