A 20-member gang arrived at the hospital in three vehicles. While some gang members stood outside, a few barged into Palani's ward and attacked him, killing him instantaneously, Joint Commissioner of Police Narayana Gowda said.

Two of Palani's aides, Muruga and Pratap, who were present in the hospital, tried to prevent the assailants from escaping, but were injured in the process.

Palani was wanted in at least 17 cases including murder, attempt to murder and assault, Gowda said.

"He had been inactive for the past two years", he said.

Hospital authorities informed the police about the attack but the gang managed to escape even before the squad could reach the spot, he added.
