A Member of Parliament belonging to the pro-royal Rashtriya Prajatantra Party in Nepal was today shot dead along with his two associates by unidentified persons in the southern Siraha district of the country.

Krishna Charan Shrestha was shot at near his house in Belha Village of the district, RPP sources said.

Two other persons accompanying Shrestha were also shot dead and two of the attackers killed in retaliatory firing by villagers, they said.

Shrestha and his two associates were killed near a pond in the village at 7.30 am (local time) when a group of 15-20 gunmen attacked them while they were going for a morning walk, Keshav Katuwal, personal assistant of RPP President Pashupati Shumsher Rana said.

The 64-year-old former Minister died on way to the Siraya Hospital, he added.

The villagers also seized weapons from the armed group suspected to be members of the Janatantrik Tarai Morcha, a breakaway faction of Maoists.

However, Katuwal said the party suspected a Maoist hand in the incident.

"But we do not have any details as to why the attack took place," he said.
