Union Home minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday reviewed the situation in Orissa's riot-hit Kandhamal district and held talks with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and leaders of different parties on the matter in Bhubaneswar.

"We had a long discussion with the chief minister, state government officials, leader of the opposition and leaders of other parties," Patil told reporters after a marathon review meeting before leaving for the riot-hit Kandhamal district.

Patil said he would be able to say something to the media after meeting the affected people in Kandhamal district.

Besides the Chief Minister, leader of opposition JB Patnaik and others from Congress party were present at the meeting.

Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy, Home secretary TK Mishra, DGP Gopal Chandra Nanda and other senior officials also apprised Patil on the situation at Kandhamal and elsewhere in the state in the aftermath of the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati.

"We have apprised the Home minister how the BJD-BJP government failed to protect life and property of the people during the riot," said senior Congress leader N Mishra after the meeting.
