The ban was enforced from Saturday, Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said in Ahmedabad.

The sale of soft drinks will be stopped in canteens of all the departments, colleges and institutes that are affiliated to the university.

Around 250 colleges in central and north Gujarat are affiliated to the university.

Leading NGO Centre for Science and Environment said in a recent report that it had found high levels of pesticide residues in 11 drinks made by the two companies.

The cola majors have denied this charge.
