Following intervention of health minister Anil Vij, the city police have arrested the astrologer accused of abetting the suicide of a staff nurse of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here.
Murder-torture-humiliation
The arrest of the accused, Roop Kishan Sharma, has been made a day after the PGIMS staff nurse welfare union (SNWU) met state health minister Anil Vij at Ambala on Tuesday.
"The minister had made calls to Rohtak deputy commissioner, IG and SP in front of us, and the police arrested the accused the very next day", said Rajbala, president of SNWU.
"The delayed action of the police in arresting the accused, who has been absconding for the past one month, has put a question mark over the working of the police", she added.
However, another accused Vishal, son of astrologer Sharma, is still at large.
However, Rohtak (city) DSP Amit Bhatia and PGIMS police station incharge Kuldeep Singh could not be contacted after several attempts.
Alleging apathetic approach of the Rohtak police in the case, the staff nurse union held repeated protest marches in the city over the past one month.
A32-year-old staff nurse, Meena ended her life on the night of March 23 in the operation theatre of the emergency ward of PGIMS, blaming the astrologer for her death. In a suicide note, she had accused the astrologer of forcing her to take the extreme step.
