Maran, who is now Union textile minister, described Singh as “bold and honest”.

Admitting that he had written to the Prime Minister (suggesting a modification in the terms of reference to an empowered group of ministers on 2G), Maran blamed the press for publicising just one letter of the many he had written to Singh as telecom minister. “Media is making a mountain of my letter to the PM in 2006,” Maran, the grandnephew of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M Karunanidhi, said.

“Of the many letters, only one letter has been leaked out. I had only requested for changes in the terms of reference to the group of ministers.”

Addressing media persons here after inaugurating a cotton yarn exporters’ facility in Chennai, the former telecom minister came out in full support of the Congress.

He said during his tenure as telecom minister there was no controversy on the allotment of 2G spectrum and everything was done in consultation with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the defence ministry and the Prime Minister. On ousted telecom minister A Raja, Maran said “he was defending himself well”.
