PM respects autonomy of AIIMS: Sanjaya Baru

The Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday said Manmohan Singh respects the autonomy of the institute.

Against the backdrop of allegations by a section of AIIMS faculty members about government interference in the functioning of the institute, the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday said Manmohan Singh respects the autonomy of the institute.

"He (the Prime Minister) has the highest regards for institutes of excellence in this country. He believes in preserving the autonomy of these institutions and he believes that these institutions have a larger important national role to play and will continue to play," the Prime Minister's Media Advisor Sanjaya Baru said.

He said Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has also said that he respects the autonomy of the AIIMS and "that is certainly the view of the Prime Minister".

On the issue of setting up a three-member panel to go into the functioning of the AIIMS, "we should look forward to this intervention. It is intervention from the Prime Ministerial level" with a man of a distinction of Dr Valiathan looking into the problems the institute is facing.
