Two persons, identified as Akbar and Mehraz, reached the police station with a complaint that a sum of Rs 65,500 was looted from them on the Collectorganj bridge, by a band of criminals, who were travelling in a Maruti car.

On getting the information, Singh reached the spot and questioned a tea shop owner — whose shop was located there — about the incident. In order to make it out as an incident of loot, the complainants lodged a case at the Collectorganj Police Station. The officials of the Collectorganj police station, after an initial inquiry, asked the Rail bazaar police to investigate the matter as the complainants hailed from the same area.

On completing preliminary investigations, Singh and his team returned to the Rail Bazaar police station and grilled the complainants. During the questioning, they told the police that they lodged a fake loot case.

In the aftermath of the quizzing, some astonishing facts came to light. They told the police that Jubeir, resident of Lucknow, was doing leather business in Kanpur. Akbar, Mehraz and Riyaz, who used work on behalf of Jubeir in the city, were told to collect money from the traders.

They collected Rs 29,500 from Sarfaraz, a resident of Kuli Bazaar and Rs 40,000 from Khalid, resident of Penchbagh and gave it to Riyaz. Later, they chalked out a plan to lodge a fake loot case and distribute the money amongst themselves.
Singh, who smelled a rat in the story, arrested the complainants and recovered the money from the house of Riyaz.

Talking to HT Singh said, “When I asked the tea shop owner, he denied any incident of loot taking place in the area, and after questioning them, I came to know of their motive for the complaint.” The police are waiting for the arrival of Jubeir from Lucknow to hand him over his money.
