Police said CPI(M) cadres and activists of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee, spearheading the agitation in Nandigram in East Midnapore district, clashed at Bat-Tala at about 6pm in which bombs and guns were used.

However, no one was injured in the incident. As large number of people arrived at the spot, the CPI(M) activists fled and the villagers gheraoed the police station in protest against the incident at about 7 pm.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Dutta reached the police station and assured the villagers to take action against the culprits. The gherao was then lifted, the sources said.

Bat-tala where the incident took place today is located in the border of Nandigram and Khejuri where skirmishes were taking place between CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress for the past three-four days.
