PROTESTING THE alleged use of the word ‘shudra’ in Hindu scriptures, a group of Vishwa Shudra Mahasabha activists garlanded a picture of Lord Rama with shoes and attempted to set three books on fire at the Common Hall of Darulshafa on Sunday noon. The activists were celebrating birth anniversary of Ramaswamy Periyaar at the place.

Additional city magistrate (ACM)-I and CO Hazratganj, however, rushed to the scene timely and arrested seven of those involved. A group of Shiv Sena and BJP activists later staged a demonstration outside the Hazratganj police station demanding stern action against the accused.

The accused were sent to jail under Section 153-A IPC.

It was around 12.30 p.m when SP (East) RKS Rathore received a phone call from an office bearer of BJP intimating about something objectionable going on at the common hall of Darulshafa. Rathore immediately passed on the information to CO Hazratganj RN Singh who rushed the scene along with ACM-I and SHO Hazratganj.

SHO Digvijay Singh said that they all entered the hall to see a garland of shoes and slippers on the picture of Lord Rama and copies of the Geeta, Ramayana and Atharva Veda on fire. The cops swung into action dousing the flames and picked out the holy books. They also threw away the garland from the picture.

The activists then started shouting objectionable slogans. The cops later pounced upon seven of the activists, before bundling all into the police jeep.
The agitators identified as Usha Patel, Praveen Kumar, Chaudhary Jagdish Patel, all of Gudamba, Rajesh of Ambedkar Nagar district and Jugul Kishore, Bawri Shiv Vineet and Skand Das of Ayodhya, Faizabad were thrown behind the bars.

The cops had to shift the accused to the Police Lines fearing an untoward incident as the Shiv Sena and BJP activists gheraoed the police station protesting the incident.
