Govinda of the white shoes and purple shirts is a subdued man today if one goes by his dress sense. Dressed in a neta outfit — a starched khadi shirt and white trousers (old habits die hard) — the latest star on the party bandwagon extends his screen persona on to the streets while campaigning in the Mumbai North constituency.

Govinda is careful to portray the simpleton image that he oozes on screen and speaks to the masses in their language. "He has a natural charisma and people just love him," says brother Kirti Kumar.

The star gives his speeches in Hindi and switches at ease to Marathi much to the delight of the audience.

All this is meant to counter his rival Ram Naik's allegations that he is not a serious candidate. But he always refers to Naik with respect and never attacks him on a personal level.

Govinda says issues concerning the people have not been addressed for years and never fails to point out that Naik represented the constituency five times and did nothing. "Govinda definitely has an earthy charm, but it has to be seen how far it will be translated into votes," says Irfan Khan, an auto driver at Palghar.
