In view of the upcoming students’ union election scheduled on December 12 and the corresponding nomination process on December 4 and 5, the university administration has imposed a the election code of conduct. Under this conduct the entry of vehicles was banned as well as those students without proper identity cards were not allowed. These steps caused quite a stir among the student leaders standing for elections. The agitated students started their protest and pelted stones at the gate of convocation hall damaging the vehicles of the chief proctor, Prof Vinay Pandey.
Thereafter sources said that general secretary of students’ union leader Hareshyam Singh Shrinetra and students’ leader Sunil Kumar Bharti reached the convocation hall along with their supporters and tried to break into the cordoned off area by the police.
This caused a scuffle between the police and students and even the opposing student groups. Amidst this confusion an unidentified miscreant fired in the air, which created quite a sensation. Police resorted to mild lathicahrge to control the situation.
Taking strong stance on the mater, Prof Pandey said the situation will be dealt with an iron hand and no one would be allowed to violate the election code of conduct.
Irked over the firing, supporters of student leader Surendra Bharti blamed Hareshyam Singh Shrinetra supporters for abortive attempt on the life of his leader. They staged a dharna at Cantonment police station and demanded the arrest of Shrinetra and his supporters.
Meanwhile, Shrinetra has categorically denied the charges and said it is a part of planned drama by the supporters of Surendra Bharti.
