The Union Territory of Pondicherry will celebrate its 44th Independence Day on Wednesday.

It was on August 16, 1962, that the 'De-jure' (legal merger of the Union Territory with the Indian Union) was affected after the French Parliament ratified the treaty of cession.
The Union Territory will observe a public holiday on Wednesday and the freedom fighters, who fought for the liberation of Pondicherry will be honoured.
