IT IS that phase of Saawan (rainy season) when the Postal department staff faces a flood of work—it’s raining rakhis! This year, they are determined to deliver them on time and in proper shape too. After all, besides New Year and Diwali, Raksha Bandhan is the time when the department works overtime to full the order of the season.

Director, Postal Headquarters, Abha Singh, says, “We have designed special rakhi envelopes this year that are waterproof and stronger. Till last year, envelopes were simple and wore off by rain or otherwise damaging or misplacing the rakhis inside. The envelopes are priced at Rs 5 per piece.”

Apart from the envelopes, the department is also trying to get in touch with several NGOs that work with handicapped children. “We want to sell rakhis at the post office since it becomes the hub for all rakhi post. Customers can buy the strings at the post office and mail them on the spot. We are contacting NGOs that make rakhi, thereby giving a platform to the social outfits too,” said Abha Singh.

Postal department is also going to set up dedicated rakhi counters at the GPO and at the Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Almabagh, Aliganj, Mahanagar, New Hyderabad, Aminabad and Chowk post offices in the city for rakhi mail. The post offices are going to be provided with huge bags marked with names of different cities, towns and States. “We will keep different bags for metros, mini-metros, important towns and cities in UP and adjoining area so that people can come and drop their envelopes in the bag marked with the name of the city to which they have to send the rakhi. We will also keep a bag for the envelopes that have to be sent abroad,” said Singh.

The postal department is well known for one fact—delay in mail delivery. But this year, the department is going to make sure they deliver all the mail on time.

They have given special attention to the Speed Post service and are making sure that they deliver the Speed Post articles on time. They intend to give a good service to the regular mail as well.
