Ramesh Powar made the utmost use of his last opportunity ahead of India's World Cup squad selection as his all-round performance helped Mumbai beat Baroda by three wickets in the Ramakant Desai Trophy (West Zone) league cricket tournament in Mumbai on Saturday.
Wilkin Mota's single on the fourth ball of the 48th over helped Mumbai overhaul Baroda's total of 223 for eight with 14 balls to spare. While Mumbai earned four points from the win, Baroda's slate remained clean.
After taking three wickets for just 28 runs off his 10 runs, Powar, promoted at No 4 in the batting order, smashed 54 off 40 balls. The all-rounder scored 50 off his 54 runs through boundaries, hitting 11 boundaries and a towering six that flew out of the Wankhede Stadium.
Powar came in to bat when Mumbai were reduced to 29 for two in the ninth over, with Sushant Marathe (0) and Rohit Sharma (6) back in the pavilion. He took his time to settle, respecting fast bowler Rakesh Patel, who finished with figures of 10-3-24-4.
However, once he got his eye in, Powar cut loose. In the 16th over, Powar welcomed left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar with two boundaries and a huge six and then followed it up by hitting medium-pacer Ketan Panchal for three successive boundaries in the very next over.
Powar added 68 runs off 72 deliveries with top-scorer Wasim Jaffer (73) before failing to clear Yousuf Pathan at mid-off off Baroda skipper Ajit Bhoite in the 20th over. Jaffer then added 81 runs with skipper Amol Muzumdar (52) to put Mumbai in a comfortable situation.
Mumbai now play Gujarat on Monday.
