EMINENT LITERARY personalities observed the 69th death anniversary of legendary writer Munshi Premchand at his ancestral village Lamhi in Varanasi on Sunday.

The function was organised under the joint auspices of Progressive Writers Association (PWA), Munshi Premchand Memorial Research and Education Trust and Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Prof Ali Ahmad Phatami, a faculty member of Urdu department in Allahabad University, highlighted the writing skills of Munshi Premchand. “He wrote about the problems of the weaker section of the society and understood the pain of animals as well”, he said and cited a character of a story of Munshi Premchand, Halku.
“The character of Halku was written with sensitivity,” he said.“Reality has its own beauty which was the main factor behind highlighting the character of Dhaniya in Premchand’s popular novel ‘Godan’, he said.
Former head, department of Hindi in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Prof Chauthi Ram Yadav, also threw light on the writing skills of Munshi Premchand. He said the problem being faced by farmers today had already been depicted by Munshi Premchand in his novel ‘Rang Bhoomi’.
“Munshi Premchand highlighted the basic needs of the society”, Prof Chathi Ram Yadav said. Former head of Hindi department in Allahabad University, Dr. Rajendra Kumar, said that Premchand presented the problems of the contemporary society through novels and stories. He cited his story, ‘Thakur Ka Kunwa’, to raise the problems of contemporary society. Dr Faqro Karim, Dr Shiv Prasad Shukla, Shiv Kumar Pandey, Jai Prakash Dhumketu, Ravi Kiran Jain and Ram Bhushan Mehlotra also spoke on the occasion.
President of Progressive Writers Association, Sanjay Srivastava, conducted the programme. Earlier, eminent literary personalities garlanded on the bust of Munshi Premchand and observed two minute silence to mark the occasion .
