The union cabinet on Tuesday evening decided to revoke president's rule in Karanataka, paving the way for the formation of a popular government following the assembly elections.

"The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has decided to revoke the proclamation issued on Nov 20, 2007 placing the state of Karnataka under president's rule," a spokesperson said.

Following the decision, Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur is expected to formally invite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which Sunday emerged victorious in this month's assembly elections, to form a government.

Ppresident's rule was imposed when the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) withdrew its support to a week-old BJP-led government headed by BS Yeddyurappa.

The governor will also have to wait for an Election Commission notification on completion of the poll process before he formally invites the BJP to form the state government.
