Protests in Srinagar after civilian found dead

Tension gripped Srinagar's Lal Chowk and adjacent areas as stone-throwing protesters clashed with police after the dead body of a civilian was recovered on Saturday.

Tension gripped Srinagar's Lal Chowk and adjacent areas as stone-throwing protesters clashed with police after the dead body of a civilian was recovered on Saturday.

A senior police officer said the body of Muhammad Maqbool Ganai, son of Gulam Muhammad Ganai, and resident of the Sarai Bala area in the city was discovered in Gaw Kadal area, 500 metres from the Lal Chowk Saturday morning.

Youth took to the streets in Lal Chowk, Sarai Bala, Maisuma and Residency Road areas. forcing closure of markets and traffic jams. The protesters also threw stones at the police.

Around a dozen protesters and policemen were injured in the clashes which continued till late afternoon.

"We have registered a case and investigations are on. It apparently looks like Ganai was murdered," a senior police officer said here.

Gunai used to sell mutton steaks in Lal Chowk, the officer added.
