Region's first psychiatry wing is opening on Saturday at the Colvin District Hospital to provide treatment and counselling services to patients suffering from psychological disorders and other chronic diseases.

The new department will be inaugurated by Additional Director (Health) Allahabad Division Dr GC Srivastava. With the opening of psychiatry wing, the Colvin Hospital will also become the first district hospital in the division to get this facility.

A full-fledged psychiatry department is already functioning at the MLN Medical College. "But a large number of patients with psychological disorders also come to the district hospital for treatment.

Every time it is not possible to refer them to the medical college. Moreover, every patient coming to the hospital is suffering from stress which triggers the disease. Realising these facts, the State Government decided to open a psychiatry wing at the district hospital, to provide holistic treatment facility to the patients," said Dr SJ Singh chief medical superintendent of the Colvin Hospital.

Dr Singh said apart from routine cases of psychological disorders, the patients of depression, anxiety, trauma, insomnia and other diseases would also be treated at the psychiatry wing. The patients admitted to other wards could also avail counselling services for quick recovery from illness. Initially OPD services would be provided to the patients. Later, it would be expanded to indoor facility for serious patients, he added.

"Dr Saurabh Tandon has been appointed on contractual basis to run the department, which is first in any of the district hospitals in the division," he informed.
