Pune: Hotelier Ajay Chordia commits suicide

Leading Pune-based businessman and hotelier Ajay Chordia was found hanging in the room of a luxury hotel in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday.

Leading Pune-based businessman and hotelier Ajay Chordia was found hanging in the room of a luxury hotel in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday.

According to the Pimpri-Chinchwad police, Chordia (47), the chairman of the luxury chain of the Panchshil Hotels, allegedly committed suicide sometime in the afternoon in a room of the Double Tree hotel which he owned.

“Chordia committed suicide at around 2:30pm by hanging himself at a VIP room in hotel Double Tree. We are investigating the case,” said B Mudiraj, inspector, Pimpri police station.

According to the police, Chordia was found hanging in the room of hotel Double Tree. A senior police official said the police were investigating the matter but refused to confirm about the recovery of suicide note .

Panchshil Hotels had recently partnered with Hilton Hotels & Resorts to launch Double Tree.

The family is known to have close relations with the Nationalist Congress Party and its chief Sharad Pawar. Chordia’s father, Ishwardas, a sugar trader, was Pawar’s classmate. Pawar daughter Supriya Sule also owned shares in the Panchshil group.

The Panchshil group has varied interests including real estate. The group was surrounded by controversies after local activist claimed land irregularities in the group's Yerwada project.
