UP VIDYUT Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti has demanded immediate and tough action against chairman Non- Conventional Electricity Development Authority (NEDA) and SP MLA Mahesh Trivedi and his accomplices for assaulting UPPCL SDO Arvind Kumar in Kanpur. They warned if action was not taken, power employees would intensify their agitation. On the other hand, power employees in Kanpur have already begun a 72-hour work boycott agitation.

The Sangharsh Samiti took this decision at its emergency meeting presided over by Shailendra Dubey here today. In a fax sent to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Sangharsh Samiti demanded that stern action be immediately taken against Trivedi and his men for beating up and torturing Pukhraya (Kanpur) SDO Arvind Kumar, who dared to check the SP MLA’s power meter at his rice mill. It warned that employees would be forced to intensify the agitation and take direct action if the guilty was not punished.

Dubey said power employees in Kanpur began a 72-hour work boycott agitation on Monday. The agitation would be over on January 12 at 10 pm. He, however, said the agitation would be intensified and extended to other parts of the State if Trivedi and his associates were not brought to book.

Sangharsh Samiti leaders, including Shailendra Dubey, Girish Pandey, AK Singh, and Chandra Prakash Awasthi also met UPPCL MD Avnish Awasthi and demanded action against the culprits and security for the SDO and his family.

Trivedi, accompanied by around a dozen henchmen, had on Saturday beaten up SDO Arvind Kumar, held him captive for hours, forced him to drink alcohol and then lodged an FIR against the tortured officer. His only crime was that he dared inspect Trivedi’s Hanuman Rice Mill following complaints of power theft.

Significantly, this is not the first incident when a UPPCL officer has been tortured. On November 5 last, a former Samajwadi Party MLA, in Moradabad had brutally beaten up executive engineer SK Mittal in the police station itself after the engineer detected power theft at his premises. No action has yet been taken in this regard till date. Similarly, around a year back, Samajwadi Party MP Ateeq Ahmad had bashed up Allahabad deputy general manager Harshchandra Singh inside the latter’s chamber. One SSO was killed and three other employees were injured in another incident in Deoria.

Sangharsh Samiti leaders said such growing incidents were creating a sense of great insecurity among power employees and if the action was not taken against the MLA and his henchmen, this, they said, would demoralize the employees.
