In Indian Cinema Guru Dutt is considered as the brooding intense actor who tried to capture the changing social norms in his films. In the short span he crafted some of the memorable socially-conscious films. Pyaasa is one of this best films.

Dutt's Pyaasa    was inspired by Sarat Chandra's novel, Srikanta. The film depicts the romance between a poet and a prostitute. And poets struggle to survive amidst philistines and publishers interested only in profiteering

Vijay (Guru Dutt), a struggling poet, is trying to make a place for himself in the society he inhabits. He finds solace in the arms of a prostitute after he is jilted by his rich girlfriend Meena (Mala Sinha). Gulab, the local prostitute, understands and appricates Vijay's work and uses her influence to get them published.

Pyaasa shows Guru Dutt transcend way above the ordinary and succeed in totality.
