Rain brings sigh of relief to zoo inmates
HEAVY RAIN have given a sigh of relief to inmates of the Kanpur Zoological garden (Zoo) and the authorities alike. While the inmates are cheerful inside their enclosures, the officials are happy over their efforts of ensuring perfect security to them against the summers-related diseases and threat to their life due to snake-bite.

Zoo director R Hemant Kumar told the Hindustan Times that during the heavy rain snakes move out to high lands abandoning the grassy ground or their burrows. Snakes posed threat to the zoo inmates during the pre-monsoon season, as they cannot survive inside the burrows due to humid conditions and they try to shift to grassy lands.
“Now we are concentrating over water-borne diseases, which might grip animals.
In order to provide protection to the animals against the water-borne diseases we have made arrangements to check waterlogging inside the enclosures and also on the zoo campus. Besides, animals have been given necessary vaccines as preventive measures,” he added.
He said that vaccine drive in the zoo was completed before the arrival of rains by July 15. Now the ‘Fuel-o-wax’ vaccine was being administered to animals to eliminate the menace of blood parasite among the animals. This vaccine would be administered by the middle of August.
The most challenging job was to protect the deer and their young ones from slipping into the moats. In the deer enclosure, dry moats are constructed to make them comfortable.
But during rains, these moats get filled with water. If the water was not cleared from the moats the deer and their little ones could slip in it and die.
Consequently, a close watch has to be maintained to keep the moats free from water.
Besides, during July to August deer give birth to new ones and hence special arrangements were being made to protect them in the enclosure, he added.
