Rain brings surprise & sorrow

THE RESIDENTS were in for a surprise on Saturday afternoon as the clouds burst open drenching them to the core even as they scurried for cover. Roads and building premises with no storm water drains were flooded. The pockmarked roads made commuting difficult, as the potholes were filled up to brim.

According to the local weather laboratory, the City received one inch (26.9 mm) rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm today. This was against 5.7 mm received in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today. Indore has received 43.84 inches (1009.6 mm) of rainfall so far.

Although there was a brief spell of rain on Friday, a bright sun greeted citizens this morning. As a result, most people left home without umbrellas and raincoats.

To many, rains meant joy as it brought down temperature, but those dwelling in slums and low-lying were faced with same problem - their household articles and bedding that took days to dry became wet again. Houses in low-lying areas faced the same problem as water gushed inside.

It wasn’t too joyful for farmers either. Kharif crop, mainly soyabean, is ready for harvest and too much rainfall or cloudy weather could lead to leaves turning yellow, and infestation. The standing crop needs continuous bright sunshine at this stage.
