Fernando came in as a potential replacement to Chaminda Vass when he made his debut. In the initial years he paid for his inconsistent line and length. Subsequently he worked hard with Rumesh Ratnayake in the Fast Bowling Unit to improve considerably and became more reliable.
He also learnt the art of reverse swing and developed a well-disguised slower ball.
However his career has been dogged with injury. He suffered his second stress fracture of the back in January 2004 and had to skip Lanka's home series against Australia.
But having worked on his back he was back in the Sri Lanka team for the Champions Trophy and will also play the three-nation series in Pakistan.
